Innovative methods of minimally invasive treatment of liver cancer in Astana

18.03.2024

The development of medicine today is largely determined by the availability of modern therapeutic and diagnostic equipment and its continuous modernization. Despite the impressive list of scientific and technical achievements, surgery remains one of the radical methods of treatment for most malignant neoplasms.

However, today, in many cases, modern oncology can offer a whole set of minimally invasive technologies that carry high therapeutic potential with a small number of complications. This discussion will focus on methods of local tumor destruction, which interventional radiologists at the National Scientific Medical Center have been using for the past 4 years.

Radiofrequency ablation of the liver is a method of minimally invasive treatment of malignant tumors of primary and secondary metastatic nature, by inserting electrodes into the tumor tissue under ultrasound guidance and applying radiofrequency electrical oscillations, which cause a significant local increase in temperature. As a result of such exposure, pathological tumor cells are destroyed, while healthy body tissues remain undamaged. This technique is an excellent alternative to surgical removal or resection of part of the liver.

This method is characterized by its simplicity of execution and the short duration of the procedure. It is distinguished by a small number of complications and low mortality, a large volume of coagulated tissue, resulting in improved quality of life.

Leading oncologists around the world have long insisted that this method should be used as the primary treatment for patients with liver tumor lesions.

The main indications for performing liver radiofrequency ablation are:

- Prior radical surgical treatment of the primary tumor
- No extrahepatic manifestations of the disease
- The presence of multiple tumor formations in the liver (no more than 5)
- The diameter of nodes not exceeding 5 cm each
- Residual tumor after surgical treatment
- Local tumor recurrence after previous RFA or liver resection

At the National Scientific Medical Center, liver ablation is performed by a highly qualified specialist, Niyaz Malaev Beisenovich, who has extensive experience in performing minimally invasive interventions in oncology. Radiofrequency ablation of liver tumors can be effectively used both as an independent method and in comprehensive treatment of oncological diseases alongside traditional techniques.

By developing new and unique treatment technologies in oncology, we aim to improve the quality of treatment and the life expectancy of our patients!
